raven   RAVEN figures prominently in the creation stories and other legends of many different lands and cultures throughout the world. He is the ultimate trickster and shapeshifter.  How RAVEN stole the light is a Tlingit legend.

In the beginning the world was in darkness.  The people were comfortable with that, in fact, they were frightened of the idea of “daylight”. Grandfather had daylight as well as the moon and the stars, but that was his secret and he kept them safely locked away inside his dwelling place. When Raven learned the secret, he was determined to steal the daylight.

In order to do so, he arranged to have himself born as a human baby to Grandfather’s daughter. Of course the baby was the joy of the old man’s life in spite of his strange darting eyes and demanding ways, which grew even worse as he grew older and learned to crawl.  Grandfather had a hard time, as grandfathers do, saying “NO” to the baby, so when his grandson cried for the moon and the stars, they were given to him. He promptly tossed them into the sky and cried for the box that held the daylight. He cried and cried until he was making himself sick, and Grandfather could stand it no longer. He gave the box containing daylight to the baby who grasped the box, turned into a raven, and flew away scattering daylight all over the world.

Grandfather was sad to have been tricked by Raven, and to loose his secret treasures.
