Once upon a time, in the woods far far away, a tortoise was forever bragging about how fast he could run, and especially loved to tease the tortoise about his slowness. One day the tortoise became angry about this teasing, and told the hare that even he could be beaten! The hare laughed at this thought, and suggested that the two have a race, just to prove the hare was right. The tortoise agreed. So a course was planned, and race began at dawn the next day. |

The tortoise took off trudging along, and the hare decided he had plenty of time to catch a quick nap before racing. The hare awoke a while later, glanced around, and saw the tortoise had only moved a short distance. So the hare decided he had time for breakfast too, so he went to a nearby cabbage field and had his fill. This of course made him sleepy. The hare saw that the tortoise was still only about halfway through the course, so he slipped into another snooze, planning to awaken in time to beat the tortoise. |

The sun started to sink into the horizon, when suddenly the hare awoke and saw the tortoise only a short distance from the finish line! The hare jumped up and began running quickly after the tortoise! His heart was racing and he was gasping for breath as he ran as fast as he could, but it was too late!!! Just as he was about to go ahead of the tortoise, the tortoise crossed the finish line. The hare collapsed in disgrace, as the tortoise smiled at him, and said "Slowly does it every time!"
Moral of the story: Slow and Steady wins the Race |
